Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works, which belongs to Metinvest Group, is trying to master production of five new steel grades using innovative technology.
Yenakiieve Steel developed a comprehensive steelmaking and deoxidation program that makes it possible to increase the range of finished products for construction such as reinforcing and round steel bars with diameter of 5,5-12mm. The innovations are introduced within the comprehensive development program of Metinvest Group enterprises.
Technologies are implemented according to the pattern “converter — ladle furnace — continuous casting machine” and are used to cast billets on continuous casting machine-1.
Within the chain “converter — ladle furnace” Yenakiieve Steel has developed a new technological process for low-carbon steel grades SAE 1006-1010. It replaces traditionally used aluminium with ferro-calcium to deoxidize low-silicon steel (rimming steel). In addition, Yenakiieve Steel specialists managed to receive the best manganese-silicon ratio in the chemical composition of steel to be used for low-alloy 25G2С и 35GС steel grades. Ground-breaking solutions make it possible to cast billets with an open jet; as the result the plant has reduced production costs without damaging the quality of the output.
“National and international mining and metals companies do not practise casting of rimming low-carbon steel grades on continuous casting machines with an open jet as it is quite a complicated process”, said Aleksandr Podkorytov, CEO of Yenakiieve Steel . “To master new technologies our steelmakers developed optimal alternatives of billet casting. Continuous casting machines are equipped with modern systems allowing to quickly change metering nozzles, that’s why we can now regulate the casting speed".
At the moment Yenakiyevo Steel Plant makes 25 steel grades.
